Gear up For Cordi Day

Last February 22, 2008 I received an invitation from Cordillera People's Alliance. The invitation was for this year's 24th Cordillera Day Celebration:

February 21, 2008

Dear Friends and Partners,

Greetings from the Cordillera Peoples Alliance!

We would like to invite you to join us on the 24th Cordillera Day celebration from April 23-24, 2008 to be held in the province of Abra and hosted by the Kakailian Salakniban Tay Nagtaudan (KASTAN), CPA’s Abra chapter. All delegates are expected to arrive at the venue on April 22 and depart on April 25. Since its beginning in 1985 from the earlier Macliing Memorials (1981-1984), the annual celebration of Cordillera Day has been vital to the growing Cordillera peoples’ unity and broadening solidarity with national and international allies and advocates for self determination and national democracy.

Cordillera Day 2008 will draw particular attention to mining as a burning issue in the Cordillera. Pending mining applications of local and global mining giants cover 1.2 million hectares or 66% of the Cordillera land area, in addition to the expanding mining operations under the Arroyo government’s policy of mining liberalization. With development aggression and plunder comes militarization, political repression, human rights violations and Oplan Bantay Laya II. These shall also be key concerns of Cordillera Day 2008.

The event will also advance the call for the immediate implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) for it to be meaningful in the recognition of indigenous peoples’ collective right to self determination. For the host province, Cordillera Day 2008 will be a concrete support and solidarity to the local people’s struggle against mining plunder and militarization. Thus, the theme of Cordillera Day 2008 is “Resist Mining Plunder and State Terrorism!”

As in the past celebrations, a registration fee of PhP300 will be collected to help cover food expenses. We also request your written solidarity messages, cultural presentations and experiences you can share based on our theme. We also solicit any financial contribution to help us defray expenses on food, logistics and transportation of grassroots organizations and indigenous communities composing the bulk of expected delegates. Kindly send your solidarity message, financial support and confirmation to CPA on or before April 18.We have attached the draft programme and background paper on Cordillera Day. Additional advisory and the venue profile will follow soon.
